Weed Walk, contd.

Pink and blue flowers:

  chicory

Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
One of my favorite summer sights is blue chicory blooming with the orange daylilies. Although the leaves look very, very much like dandelion, the flower, which closes in bright sunshine and opens on cloudy days, or early in the morning, is distinctive. The root of this perennial plant is often dug up, washed, roasted until brown, ground up and used as a coffee extender or substitute. It can also be tinctured and used to cooling overheating livers. The leaves can be cooked and eaten, but only after several boiling water baths. I use the flowers in my Third Eye Opening Tincture.

 Venus looking glass

Venus’ looking glass (Specularia perfoliata)
I find it difficult to take good photos in the bright sun, so, often, I go to the plants at dusk, when the light is diffuse and even. But this brilliantly-hued flower closes then and I had to be there in the bright sun to show you its beauty. Truly a looking-glass for a goddess!

  Maiden pink

Maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides)
This shocking pink flower, with its exquisite patterns in the petals, is the grandmother of many cultivated flowers including carnations and sweet williams. Sweeps of it adorn open areas, inviting us to partake of the exuberant joy of nature.
